On my way...

well well well... there is more than one reason to get excited this week besides traveling to India. Yeah, I just became one of those guys who switched from PC to a Mac. Finally, months of wait is over and I can play with my own 'leopard' now. Haven't had enough time to play with it though. But I guess I'll get to exploit its features in my coming trip to India. If this excitement lasts for a while, then hopefully you will see the next post on the iweb :)

Guess I'm already on my way to become a 'Mac Freak' :D

US of A

Just came back from a week long trip to what my friend calls as U Stay Alone. Some people call it USA :)
I had a presentation at a conference there in San Jose. The presentation was just a formality. Actually, I was looking forward to meeting some old buddies from college there. The weather was pleasantly cool and I had a really nice week. Went around UC Berkeley, spent some quality time with old pals. All'n'all it was a nice trip. Except only; yeah, the 'security checks' before boarding the flight. But given that it was a 'United Airlines' flight, I was kind of expecting the 'checks'. Didn't piss me off much this time though, cause I had gone through it last time.

But it reminded me of this funny video. How perfect for this kinda situation!! ;-)

ええじゃないか ええじゃないか！

研究室合宿で二日間口湖に行ってきました。一日目は富士急ハイランドとお釣りに分けてありました。合宿で１６人も行ったんですが、富士急に興味あったのは５人しかいなかった。コースター大好きな僕がもちろん富士急に決定!

ちょっと遅れて午後２時半に富士急に到着。時間が少なかったから切符を買って早速新しいアトラクション"ええじゃないか"へ。近づいて待ち時間を見るとなんと２時間半！どうするか。あきらめてほかの人気ないアトラクションへ行くか、総回転数世界一のコースターをチャレンジするか。コースター好きの全員でええじゃないかの勝ち！
こんな世界一コースターの始めての体験。大好きっていっても乗っている人が見るとテンションがどんどん高まっていく。後ろ向きにあがってそのままとんでもない高さから９０度の阪に落ちるなんてこえぇー！しかも途中でなんと下向きに回転！ええぇー！！

でも乗って見たら意外と楽しい！さすが総回転数世界一コースター！なんと１４回転でギネス認定！乗って見ると確かに２時間待つ勝ちがあるなってことがわかる。

時間がなかったのでそれだけで富士急は終了。次の日は予定に入ってなかったのに四人がまた「ええじゃないか」チャレンジしに富士急へ！また２時間の待ちでともう一つのライド。乗れば乗るほど楽しくなっていくええじゃないか。それの影響で後で乗ったKing of coasters 'フジヤマ'も普通に思われた　（＾＿＾）

いや、またチャレンジしに行きたいなー、　ええ（はんぱ）じゃないか！

久しぶりのスケッチ！
夏休みの宿題　（＾＿＾）

日印交流年

そう。2007年は日印交流年だって。

先週郵便局に切手買いに行った時、掲示板に⇒これをはってた。今年は日印交流年だと知っていたけど、こういう記念切手を出ていることが知らなかった。こちょっとビックリ、ちょっと嬉しい感じでこの珍しいものを早速ゲットした！

僕がちっちゃいころ趣味で切手を集めていた。でも高校から興味がなくなってきて集まった切手をいとこにあげた。

切手を集めるのはやめたけど手紙を書くのはやめてない。手紙を書くのは好きだからいくら忙しくても時々友達と実家に手紙を出している。手紙って読んだら気持ちが暖かくなるよね。いくら電話で話しても、いくらメール出しても、いくらチャットしてもそのあたたかさは感じられない。封筒から手紙を出して手で持って読むと一瞬その人を前にいるような気がする。今、こんなデジタル時代でも友達から実家から手紙をもらっている僕は自分がすごくluckyだと思う。

「花．これから」

という展覧会をみてきました。うちの大家さんがフラワーデザインのプロでこういう展覧会に毎年参加しているらしいです。今年は大家さんが銀座にあるこの展覧会の招待券をくれました。僕は花のことが何も分からないけど、せっかく招待券くれたし、日本に展覧会見たこともなかったからイー君と見に行きました。
　最初はいけばなかと思ったけど、ちょっと違う形で、日本の方法でアメリカのフラワーデザインというテーマでした。入ったら結構込んでいましたけど、どこ見ても女の人ばっかり。もちろん女の人がフラワーデザインが好きだけど、花が好き男の人っていないだろうかね。 と思ってちょっと恥ずかしい気持ちでなかに入った。全国から来たいろんな人のデザインは６つのテーマで分かれていた。全部のデザインがどれが良いかきめられないぐらい美しかった。大家さんが自分のデザインと他のフラワーデザインも説明してくれた。竹とクリスマスローズを使った大家さんのデザインもとても素敵だった。イー君が植物と花のことが詳しくて嬉しそうに説明を聞きながら質問を出してた。僕は日本にある植物と花のことがあまり分からないし、何でこんな女の人ばっかりいる展覧会見に来たかと思ったけど、そこにあったいろんな美しいフラワーアレンジメントを見てデザイナーたちの想像力に感動した。日本で始めての展覧会だったんですが、いい経験になりました。次は上野にあるダ．ヴィンチの絵の展覧会も見てみようかな。

Well, I've succeeded in watching at least first two of them, which makes the title of this post. I won't bore you or take away the excitement by posting "reviews" here, but would just say, both were a good watch.

Can't wait to watch the remaining ones :)

New Look

ついにブログデザインを変えました。まぁ、デザイン変えてもポストの数が増えると言わないけどね。日本語の練習のためこのブログを始めたんだけど、よく考えたら僕最近日本語の勉強全然してないな。最近っていうか結構前から。一年間半前日本語能力試験のため勉強してた。そのときの日本語の能力に比べると何も変わってないような気がするんだな。やばい、勉強しなきゃ。

Pirates of Silicon Valley

Well, we all know about Pirates of the Caribbean; Captain Jack Sparrow and his notorious team of sailors, don't we? But what's this pirates of silicon valley all about? Can you guess from the pictures?

You guessed right. This drama-cum-movie is about the two giants of Silicon Valley, Steve Jobs and Bill Gates, and their rivalry during early establishment days of Apple and Microsoft. It's about how they transformed themselves from college kids to billionaires. Both made a fortune in their own ways, but one thing was common between them; both stole the technology from others. First Steve Jobs stole GUI and mouse from Xerox and then Gates stole it from Jobs. It's not a big surprise, but it's good to watch the actual incidents that happened during that time. There is one interesting quote from Jobs in the movie.
"Good artists copy, great artists steal".

Wow, what a nice way to defend piracy! The drama was made in 1999, but I don't know how come I did not see it before. Perhaps I was too busy myself doing piracy in my undergrad exams ;-)

Both the actors have performed brilliantly and portrayed the personalities of Steve Jobs and Bill Gates very nicely. There's once scene in the movie I liked. At one point, when Steve Jobs realizes that Bill Gates copied his prototype mac and used it for windows, he gets mad at Gates. But then it's too late and he cannot do anything about it. So he says to Gates in desperation, "We're better than you are! We have better stuff."

The reply of Bill Gates takes the cake. He says very calmly "You don't get it, Steve. That doesn't matter!"

Most of the incidents depicted are based on actual events and that's what makes this movie interesting. A must see for OS freaks. And for all who use computers, a nice watch!

昨日研究室から９人が卒業しました。一人はあと１年間研究室に残りますけど他の８人はみんな卒業して社会人になります。一気に８人が研究室からいなくなるなんてありえないぐらい寂しいですね。僕はこの研究室に入ってからもう２年間半たちました。この二年間半見ると３年前のF.R.I.E.N.D.Sの最後のシーズン思い出します。あの時あのドラマは本当に終わってほしくなかった。今もこの二年間半終わってほしくない (;_;)

下手くそなんだけど、せっかくだから、この日本語の先生たちに日本語で感謝しないと。

皆さん、
卒業おめでとうございます！皆さんに大変迷惑かけたと思いますが、この間ずっと面倒見てくれたり、一緒にいろんな所へつれて行ったり、遊んだり、日本語と色々教えてくれたり、本当にお世話になりました。皆さんのおかげで今までの研究室の生活にいい思い出になりました。本当にありがとうございます。We’ｌｌ miss you.
また一緒に遊ぶ機会がいっぱいあると思いますが、これからもよろしくお願いします。

新しい道を体験するため出かけているみんなにすべての最もよいの。

Holi hai !!!

今日はホーリー(Holi)です！今日ちょっと懐かしい感じでホーリーの紹介しようかなと思ってます。日本語のレベルが足りないと思いますが、頑張ってみます。

ホーリーとは、インドの三大祭りの一つに数えられる大きなお祭りです。Festival of coloursと呼ばれるこの祭りでは色のついた粉や水をまくことにより、冬の終わりを告げ、春の訪れを祝います。

北と南インドでホーリーを祝う方法が違いますが僕が北と南の間に住んでいますから両方やってます。ほーりーの日の一週間前から店でいろんな色を売り始め、多くの人がその日を期待されてます。

そしてその日友達と家族と知り合いの人に色をまいてホーリーを祝っています。


Well, this festival is not just about fun and colors. As for all festivals in India, there is a scientific reason for celebrating Holi. This festival occurs at the onset of spring. This period, during which the weather changes, is prone to cause viral fever and cold. Thus, the playful throwing of the coloured powders has a medicinal significance as the coloured powders are made of Neem, Kumkum, Haldi, Bilva, and other medicinal herbs prescribed by Āyurvedic doctors.

インド人にもホーリーを嫌がっている人がいるんです。あの人たちはその日絶対に家を出ません。色水かけられるのは日本人にとっても嫌だと思いますが僕にとってはすごい楽しい事です。

Gosh, I miss Holi.

Upadates

More than two months have passed since I wrote last post. Laziness, at its peak :)
Well, time to scribble something on this page. What did I do in these two months besides lying lazily?

1. I did a Tape Out (I know this is not a thing to write because I'm supposed to do it anyway. That's part of my work.) But important point is that because of this tape out, I missed or rather did not have time to see this mindblowing product and it's amazing presentation. Boy, Steve Jobs rocks!

2. After almost two years, I flew back to my homeland for a months vacation. Spent some quality time with family and friends, went some places around, ate lots of things, gained lots of weight and forgot most of the Japanese that I had learnt.

3. After much of the efforts, I finished my first Japanese novel '窓ぎわのとっとちゃん' by 黒柳 徹子(Tetsuko Kuroyanagi). Although I fishied the last half of the book in the airplane, it took me two months to finish the book. But it was worth it. Very touching novel. No doubt it was a bestseller. Its about a nursery schoolgirl 'Tottochan'and her unique school 'Tomoe' a visinory teacher headmaster Kobayashi-sensei. You don't realize while reading how you become part of Tottochan's world full of curiosity. How Kobayashi-sensei grooms his students in his own unique way and how his small experiments change his students way of looking at life is something worth reading. I would definitely like to write something more about this book in future. But before that I'm gonna read it again.

4. What else? I just returned (safely) from a 3 day ski trip. 'Kusatsu onsen'; as the name suggests, a place famous for its onsen is also a ski resort. There was not much of the snow around though. May be because we were late this year. But overall, a nice trip.

Oh.. by the way, I also received a funny email forward from my friend which reminded me my school day exams.

日本語の勉強を始めた時先生は「Japanese language is very rich of expressions」って言ってた。なのになんでこんなに顔文字が使う必要なのって僕にとって不思議です。
すごく分かりにくい顔文字があればすぐ分かる簡単な顔文字もある。たとえば　(^_^)　これは笑っている顔、(T_T)　これは泣いている顔。

でもこれは全然理解できない。

先週の日曜日の日吉キャンパス。






最初はカメラを持ってなかったけどこの景色を見たら写真とらずにはいられなかった。早速部屋に戻ってカメラをもって来た。

あんまり分からないからMixiでコミュニティのページをさわった事がなかったけど、昨日ちょっと見てみようかなと思ってコミュニティの世界に入ったら面白いミュニティがたくさん出てきた。そこで、インドのコミュニティをあるか見てみようとしたらなんとBollywoodの女優とか映画のコミュニティをいくつか発見！！しかもそのコミュニティの日本人のメンバ達はみんなBollywoodの女優とか俳優はすごく詳しくて超ビックリ！日本でBollywoodがこんなに人気されてるのかと思わなかった。早速四つぐらいコミュニティに入って次行くともう一つ面白いコミュニテイが発見。今度は「ヒロシです！」と言うコミュニティ！ヒロシは最近テレビで出てないんだけど去年とか今年の始めごろよく出ていた。ちょっと悲しそうなラティンバックグラウンドミュージックですごいタイミングで愚痴を言うヒロシは僕が好きだった。この「ヒロシです」コミュニティにのぞいて見たらそこでヒロシのオリジナルネタを書いていた。久しぶりにそれを読んだら笑わずにはいられなくなった。気になったからここにちょっと書いておこう。

A novel approach for the study of various aspects of learning languages

Abstract-This paper presents a comprehensive study of studying languages and its effects on the day to day life. The paper also proposes some new theories based on the modification of some old theories with some simulation as well as experimental results. The paper concludes with some novel techniques for studying new languages without forgetting old ones.

With the recent advancements in the reading and communicating ability of Japanese, the author has observed that that the rate of improvement in Japanese skills is proportional to the rate of decline in English skills. Furthermore, recent observations reveal that excessive reading of English technical or journal papers and lack of observing English movies and dramas can result in limiting the vocabulary to that found only in bulky technical papers. This can be proved by the sentence pattern found throughout this text. Writing graduation thesis or dissertation creates additional complications. Consequently, the speaking or hearing ability is also affected drastically and as a result the day to day communication takes the form of the technical paper text.

It has been proven periodically that the rules of mathematics cannot be applied to languages. However, as a science graduate, the author cannot avoid the temptation of relating a law of physics to human's ability of learning languages. Based on the Law of conservation of energy [1], it can be proved that
'in human brain words from one language can take form of other language. However, the total amount of words of all languages in human brain at any time is always constant.'
This can be called as 'Law of Conservation of Languages' or LCL©.

The author has studied five languages extensively including his mother tongue. Initially, from simulation and later with some experimental results it has been observed that learning languages can be frustrating at times. It can be evident from the immense pain required for the author to recollect the spelling of as simple word as 'tongue' in the above sentence. The readers can imagine intuitively the amount of pain involved in recollecting the characters and their stroke order in the Asian script. From experience, it can be further proved that at the time of recollecting word from one particular language, words from all other languages with similar meaning are popped up in mind except the one that is needed. With a little variation, it can be proved that this is true for all languages and all persons.

Present work discusses various theories and techniques for improvement in English (since it is not a language of majority in this region). Many theories have been proposed so far for the improvement of English reading, speaking and writing ability. Some old theories that are proven over time, such as reading books, newspapers or hearing news, require hardwork and patience and are not practiced by many people. Another studious technique requires appearing for some competitive exams such as TOEFL or GRE or TOIEC. But again, very few people are ready to compromise their happiness for learning English. Some of the theories invented by some lazy people include taking English book as a pillow while sleeping believing that the knowledge will get transferred in sleep (These fellows do that for other books too). But this theory has not been proved yet. Watching Hollywood movies is one of the proven way for improving communication skills, but it is not a 'cost effective' solution and may limit the communication ability to 'excessive slang'. Having an English speaking girlfriend or boyfriend is another effective way, but most of the times it turns out to be a liability than asset. One of the novel, 'cost effective' solution can be downloading illegal (or so called 'pirated') movies or dramas from the internet [2]. However, this should be done at one's own risk and some people think of it as unethical. From intuition, it can be seen that each of the above methods has it's own advantages and disadvantages.

Adapting one particular method still remains a challenge for the scholars all over the world. One way proposed earlier by the author[3] is starting writing a blog. Simulations results have shown that it can improve language skills as the blog can be checked by people all over the world and some suggestions can be obtained. However the effectiveness of this method has not been tested yet and remains the topic for future work.

Conclusion:
A comprehensive study of various aspects of learning a language is presented. Law of Conservation of Languages(LCL©) is proposed based on simulation and experience results. Finally, classification of various theories and techniques for improving English is presented. It can be concluded that there is always a 'trade-off' involved among the adoption of different methods for learning English and the best method can be selected depending on one's own requirement and interest.

週末プラン

写真取りに出かけるか、ブログ書くか、あたたかいコーヒを飲みながら日本語の小説読むかそれともこの前描いたスケッチに色つけるか。
今ライフカードのCM「どうする俺？」みたいな感じ。

(^_^) 最近テレビ見すぎかな。

　でも、「それより学校言って勉強や研究やればどう」と誰かに言われたら、本当にどうする俺？

Autumn Sonata

HIHの贅沢な暮らしを終わってもう３ヶ月。そして、T.O.終わってもう３週間。T.O.の後で色々やろうと思ったんだけど、ずっと怠けで何もやりなかった。先々週軽井沢にドライブに行って来ました。それの写真もまだアップロードしてない。T.O. の所為で２ヶ月何もできなかったので ”Photo Expedition”にどこかへ出かけようかなと思っていた。軽井沢が日本に一番行きたい所のリストに結構上にあったのでそこにいくことにした。週末に車を借りて三日間のドライブに出かけた。ナビがついていたのに、最初の高速入り口をミッスして戻るのは面倒くさくて東京に入ってしまった。この前東北で運転したことがあったんだけど、東京の複雑な道路で初めてだった。でも、インドに比べると全然O.K.!!　　

軽井沢というと自然な所のイメージがあったが、実はRoyalな所。しかもテニスコートが多い。三日間いっぱい写真取ったり、温泉入ったりのんびりしたりいいものを食べたり最高の気持ちだった。天気が良くて紅葉もちょうどpeakになっていてこのドライブはいい思い出になった。
